Hyperhidrosis – Treatment of Excessive Sweating with Botulinum Toxin (Botox)

Sweating is a natural mechanism that helps regulate body temperature. In some people, however, this process becomes excessive and occurs for no specific reason: this is hyperhidrosis. This excessive sweating can affect several areas, most often the underarms, hands and feet, and can significantly impact quality of life, both socially and professionally.
The most effective and best tolerated treatment today is botulinum toxin injection, which temporarily yet durably reduces sweat gland activity.

Underarm injection

How does the treatment work?

The treatment consists of a series of intradermal micro-injections directly into the target area. A very fine needle is used to target the nerve endings responsible for excessive sweat production.
Depending on the severity of hyperhidrosis, one or two vials may be required. Before the session, it is recommended to:

  • Shave the area if necessary (e.g. underarms),
  • Apply a numbing cream such as Emla for improved comfort.

Injections are quick and allow an immediate return to activities.

Results & effectiveness

First effects usually appear within one week.
Sweating reduction can reach 85%, and results generally last 6 to 9 months.
The treatment is reversible, well tolerated, and causes very few side effects.

Contraindications

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and certain rare neuromuscular diseases are contraindications to treatment.

Hyperhidrosis treatment with botulinum toxin is an effective, lasting and safe solution to regain comfort, peace of mind and freedom of movement in everyday life. In most cases, the cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown, but a medical assessment may be required to rule out an underlying cause.
